Bay Tree
Laurus nobilis
The bay tree, or Laurus nobilis, is a must have for a herb garden. An aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub that is native to the Mediterranean region, the bay leaf is used for seasoning in cooking. Bay trees are pretty versatile and will grow in full sun or part shade. They are drought, frost and salt tolerant but need to have good drainage. They also do very well grown in pots. NOTE: they are best kept small, so ‘harvest’ the leaves at least once a year by pruning the plant to keep it a manageable size.
